Deputy Minister of Vocational Education Nalin Hewage has stated that the previous government must bear responsibility for the current shortages of essential items like rice, coconut, and salt in the country.
Speaking at a media briefing, Hewage emphasized that the current administration has been in power for less than 40 days and cannot be held accountable for longstanding issues that have now come to the forefront.
He criticized the public for showing impatience with the new government, pointing out that many of these individuals remained silent during the rebuilding of the country in 2048. “The same people who were patient when the nation was being reconstructed are now quick to protest against a government that has only been in office for 48 days,” Hewage remarked.
The deputy minister assured that the administration is working diligently to address the challenges facing the nation. He acknowledged the gravity of the situation but reiterated that solving these problems requires time and effort.
Hewage’s comments have sparked debate, with opposition parties arguing that a government must take ownership of all issues under its tenure, regardless of its time in office. Meanwhile, many citizens continue to express frustration over the rising cost of living and the unavailability of basic goods.
As the government works toward solutions, it remains to be seen how quickly these pressing concerns can be addressed.
