Sri Lankan cricket captain Charith Asalanka has clarified the decision to drop all-rounder Dunith Wellalage from the squad ahead of their upcoming series against New Zealand. Speaking to the media before the team’s departure on December 20, Asalanka explained that the selection was made to provide an opportunity for an additional fast bowler, given the conditions expected in New Zealand.
Asalanka noted that New Zealand’s pitches, known for favoring fast bowlers, required Sri Lanka to adjust their squad accordingly. He acknowledged that the decision to drop Wellalage was not easy, stating, “It was a very difficult decision for me, the selection committee, and the coach.” He emphasized that while Wellalage’s omission was tough, it was essential to give a fast bowler the chance to perform in such conditions, which are quite different from Sri Lanka’s more spin-friendly pitches.
Despite the changes, Asalanka expressed confidence in his team’s preparations. He shared that the players were in good spirits after their successful performance in the T-10 series, where they gained valuable experience and confidence. “The players are in good spirits. They played well in the T-10 series and were in the running for wickets. It was good preparation for the team,” he added.
Asalanka also recognized the strength of the New Zealand team, stating that the hosts remain formidable on home turf and have largely maintained their squad. However, he remains hopeful that the experienced players will help guide the newcomers through the challenges of the series.
The series will kick off with a three-match T20 series, followed by three ODIs. The first T20 match will take place on December 28, with subsequent matches on December 30 and January 2, 2025.
