The Sri Lanka Police have announced a special traffic operation set to begin on Monday, December 23, aiming to reduce road accidents involving passenger buses and other vehicles. This operation will be in effect through the end of the festive season, and is designed to address the growing number of road incidents, particularly those involving public transportation.
Under the guidance of the Acting Inspector General of Police, the operation will focus primarily on passenger buses, with authorities inspecting whether drivers are under the influence of alcohol or other substances. Additionally, reckless driving, overspeeding, operating buses with unsuitable tires, or vehicles with technical defects will be specifically targeted.
The operation will also include checks on other types of vehicles, with traffic officers deployed across the country for 24-hour surveillance. The police are calling on the public to report any unsafe driving, including violations involving buses and other vehicles, through the 119 and 1997 hotlines. Citizens can also contact their local police stations or the designated traffic officers’ mobile numbers in their regions.
In a bid to further strengthen the enforcement, the public is encouraged to send any video evidence of traffic violations or offenses via WhatsApp to the provided contact numbers. The Police Media Division has assured that legal action will be taken based on the information and evidence submitted by the public.
The initiative reflects the authorities’ commitment to improving road safety and enforcing traffic laws during the high-traffic festive season.
