Jaffna District Independent Member of Parliament Ramanathan Archuna clashed with government officials at the Kilinochchi District Development Committee meeting today (26), sparking controversy over issues related to illegal sand mining in the district.
The argument unfolded during discussions about the ongoing problem of unregulated sand mining, a topic that has drawn significant public and administrative concern. The confrontation began when MP Archuna questioned the actions of Sahadeva, Chairman of the Kilinochchi Forest Development Board, accusing him and his department of failing to address the problem effectively. Sahadeva, supported by other officials, defended the department’s efforts, which escalated into a heated verbal exchange.
The meeting, held at the Kilinochchi District Secretariat, was chaired by Fisheries Minister Ramalingam Chandrasekaran. Northern Provincial Governor Nagalingam Vedanayagam, along with several state and security officials, were also in attendance.
Observers noted that the altercation reflected deeper frustrations over resource management and governance in the region. Illegal sand mining has been a persistent issue in Kilinochchi, with local communities voicing concerns about environmental degradation and insufficient enforcement of regulations.
Minister Chandrasekaran ultimately intervened to de-escalate the situation, calling for calm and urging all parties to work together to resolve the issue constructively. The meeting resumed after the intervention, but tensions remained high.
This is not the first time MP Archuna has been involved in a public altercation. Known for his outspoken nature, he has frequently criticized government officials over what he perceives as inefficiencies and lack of accountability.
The incident has highlighted the growing need for transparent policies and stricter enforcement measures to tackle illegal activities, such as sand mining, which have far-reaching implications for the environment and local livelihoods. Further discussions on the matter are expected in the coming weeks.
