Hambantota International Port has witnessed a notable rise in cruise ship arrivals in 2024, signaling a positive turnaround after its controversial takeover by China. This year, the port welcomed 23 cruise ships, with a significant shift in their origin—while arrivals from the Indian subcontinent decreased, European vessels have significantly increased their presence.
Out of the 23 cruise ships that docked at Hambantota, 17 came from Europe, while only six were from India. This marked trend highlights Hambantota’s growing reputation as a cruise destination for European tourists exploring South Asia.
A key milestone for the port occurred in early December 2024, when the Azamara Pursuit, part of the Miami-based Azamara Cruise Line fleet, made its maiden voyage to Hambantota. This ship joined other Azamara vessels, such as the Azamara Quest, Azamara Journey, and Azamara Onward, which had previously called at the port in 2023. The successful arrival of these ships highlights Hambantota’s increasing popularity among international cruise lines.
Prudential Shipping, the local agent for Azamara Line, facilitated 10 calls from cruise liners to Hambantota this year, strengthening the port’s position in the cruise industry. Additionally, Celebrity Millennium and Silver Whisper, two prestigious passenger vessels, completed their final port calls for 2024 at Hambantota on December 13, wrapping up a successful cruise calendar for the year.
According to Wilson Ku, Group CEO of Hambantota International Port, 2024 has seen a strong trend of European cruise vessels exploring the region, and this momentum is expected to continue into 2025. The port anticipates not only more arrivals from Europe but also a rise in ships from the Indian subcontinent as it further cements its position as a key player in South Asia’s cruise tourism market.
Looking ahead, Hambantota International Port is poised for even greater success in 2025, with expectations for increased vessel arrivals and enhanced global recognition, positioning it as a growing hub for international cruise tourism.
Hope these cruise liners from Europe are not brining in Zionist Jews into the country and create another occupation. What measures have the government taken to ensure no one jumps ship and take residence in Arugambe.
