The Tamil Progressive Alliance (TPA), a member of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) coalition, has announced its decision to contest the upcoming local government elections under its own symbol. MP Palani Digambaram revealed that the alliance will first engage in discussions with the SJB to explore potential collaboration, especially in districts like Badulla. However, Digambaram expressed concerns about the SJB’s practice of fielding its own candidates, which could limit opportunities for the TPA’s members.
He emphasized that if the SJB does not offer satisfactory opportunities for TPA candidates, the alliance would move forward independently. Digambaram is confident that running separately would increase the TPA’s chances of securing more seats and appointing its own members to local government bodies.
The TPA aims to strengthen its representation, particularly in areas like Badulla, and is hopeful that contesting independently will lead to a greater number of elected members from their party.
