President Anura Kumara Dissanayake held a high-level discussion today (28) at the Presidential Secretariat with senior officials from the Department of Immigration and Emigration, Sri Lanka Customs, and the Airports and Civil Aviation Corporation. The meeting focused on combating the entry of illegal substances, such as drugs, into the country and addressing issues of corruption, fraud, and irregularities at key entry points, including airports.
During the discussion, the President outlined several decisive steps to strengthen the nation’s border security and prevent illegal activities. Among the primary measures is the establishment of a joint camera surveillance system and a centralized monitoring room to coordinate efforts between the three institutions. This integrated approach aims to improve real-time monitoring and ensure swift action against suspicious activities.
President Dissanayake also stressed the urgent need to replace outdated scanners with modern, high-tech equipment to detect smuggling activities more effectively. He directed the authorities to devise and implement a practical new process for inspections, ensuring the highest level of scrutiny at all ports of entry and exit.
Additionally, the President underscored the importance of restoring public trust in Sri Lanka Customs, urging the immediate implementation of strict disciplinary and legal actions to eliminate corruption within the institution.
The meeting also focused on preventing individuals from leaving the country illegally, an issue that has gained prominence in recent months. President Dissanayake emphasized the need for a coordinated response to this challenge, calling for closer collaboration between the relevant authorities to address the problem comprehensively.
The discussion was attended by key government figures, including Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment, and Tourism Vijitha Herath, Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs Ananda Wijepala, Secretary to the President Dr. Nandika Sanath Kumanayake, Director General of Customs Sarath Nonis, Acting Controller General of Immigration and Emigration B.M.D. Nilusha Balasuriya, Chairman of the Airports and Civil Aviation Corporation Air Chief Marshal Harsha Abeywickrama, and Director General of the National Budget at the Ministry of Finance Jude Nilukshan.
