In a bid to reduce traffic accidents during the festive season, the Sri Lanka Police, under the directive of the Inspector General of Police, has launched a special operation targeting reckless driving by long-distance passenger bus drivers.
The initiative involves the deployment of plainclothes officers aboard buses to monitor driver behavior firsthand. These officers travel significant distances on long-distance buses, observing drivers for violations such as reckless driving, mobile phone use while driving, overtaking on pedestrian crossings, and exceeding speed limits.
Once violations are documented, uniformed police officers stationed at predetermined locations intercept the buses, confront the drivers with evidence of their infractions, and take legal action.
Passengers have also contributed valuable information, reporting dangerous driving behaviors to authorities.
The operation is set to continue throughout the festive season to ensure the safety of passengers and other road users, emphasizing strict enforcement of traffic laws.
