An army Sergeant was taken into custody after he is alleged to have forced his wife and seven year-old son to walk 22 kilometres from Dambulla towards Kandy in central Sri Lanka at knife point, police said Wednesday.
The suspect who was not identified was picked up without any resistance after his wife had notified the local police.
It was later learnt at a court appearance that the suspect was suffering from a mental disorder and the local Magistrate ordered that he be treated accordingly while he remains in custody.
The motive for the suspect’s action was not clear as police investigate the case further.
The mother and son were later handed over to relatives while the knife was also recovered from the suspect, police said.
