Mount Lavinia Magistrate Nilupuli Lankapura has directed the Colombo Fraud Investigation Bureau (FIB) to conduct a thorough investigation and submit a detailed report on allegations involving Trade Minister Wasanthai Samarasinghe and Deputy Labour Minister Mahinda Jayasinghe.
Minister Samarasinghe is accused of using a forged deed to lease a two-story building in Dehiwala belonging to the National Institute of Labour Trade Union. The property was allegedly leased to Mahinda Jayasinghe, who also serves as the General Secretary of the Lanka Teachers’ Union, for Rs. 3.6 million.
President’s Counsel Maithri Gunaratne, representing the aggrieved party alongside Kisal Senanayake, objected to the FIB’s request to refer the investigation to the Attorney General before its completion. Gunaratne argued that the B report filed by the police clearly identifies those implicated in the incident, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive investigation.
The FIB had claimed that ownership of the property was unclear due to changes in the board of officers of the National Labour Institute over time, necessitating further inquiry. However, Gunaratne opposed delaying the investigation and insisted on immediate clarity regarding the alleged forgery and fraudulent transaction.
After reviewing the arguments, Magistrate Lankapura ordered the police to expedite the investigation and submit a complete report by February 21. This case continues to draw public attention, given the involvement of high-ranking officials in the alleged misuse of public assets.
