Some 115 school children belong to a total of 150 persons that have been killed in motor accidents in Sri Lanka from the start of this year and there are fears that the body count could tick on, local media reported.
The majority of those killed has been due to reckless driving by motorists, the State-owned Daily News quoted senior police officials as saying Friday.
It said that there were 2,363 motor fatalities in 2020, 2,513 the following year and 2,515 in 2022.
The police have repeatedly carried out special operations both in the Metropolis, the suburbs and rural areas to nab errant motorists in a bid to stem the high rise in such fatalities but the body count keeps ticking on, a senior official with the Police Traffic Division conceded.
