Former Minister Vajira Abeywardena has expressed concern over the challenges faced by Sri Lanka under the current government, attributing the issues to the leadership of inexperienced individuals.
Speaking at a media briefing, Abeywardena highlighted the worsening rice and coconut crises, emphasizing that such problems were absent during Ranil Wickremesinghe’s tenure as President. He recalled Wickremesinghe’s effective management of resources, pointing out that during his leadership, tons of rice were distributed freely to the public, with each household receiving up to 20 kilos.
“These issues didn’t exist when Ranil Wickremesinghe was at the helm. He managed to maintain stability and ensure basic necessities were readily available to the people,” Abeywardena said.
He further stated that Wickremesinghe remains committed to the welfare of the country, regardless of his official position. “If there is danger to Sri Lanka, Ranil Wickremesinghe is ready to step in and help, whether he holds power or not,” Abeywardena affirmed, underscoring Wickremesinghe’s dedication to the nation.
Abeywardena’s remarks come amidst growing public dissatisfaction with the current administration’s handling of economic and supply chain issues. He called for experienced leadership to navigate the country through its ongoing crises.
