Two National People’s Power (NPP) MPs, Wijesiri Basnayake and Ajith Gihan, have shared their accounts of the chaotic incident at a garment factory in Bingiriya that led to a heated confrontation.
MP Wijesiri Basnayake explained that they had visited the factory to inspect ongoing development work in the area. He stated, “We went to the garment factory early in the morning. The Bingiriya MP highlighted several development projects there. After discussing one of them and while leaving, a group appeared, creating a tense situation.”
MP Ajith Gihan added further context, claiming the incident stemmed from disputes over transportation services for factory employees. “The group that previously managed the transportation has been removed. Local drivers insist that transportation services should be provided fairly. The factory administration agreed to resolve the matter by calling for tenders, but as we exited the discussions, a group staged a protest.”
The MPs reported that they have filed a formal complaint about the incident, highlighting the need for transparent and equitable solutions to the transport issue.
This incident has drawn public attention, with local residents voicing concerns about both transportation disputes and the conduct of political representatives in the area. The garment factory’s administration has yet to issue an official statement.
