A signature campaign was organized in Mannar by the Northern Province Organization for the Release of Political Prisoners, urging the government to fulfill its promise to release political prisoners. The event, held in front of the Mannar Bnawathumbala, highlighted frustrations over the lack of progress on commitments made by the current President during his pre-election visit to the Northern Province.
Participants expressed that since the government assumed office, no concrete steps have been taken to address the plight of political prisoners, leaving their families in a state of despair.
The protest drew significant support from civil and religious organizations, relatives of prisoners, and local residents. Organizers criticized the government’s inaction, describing it as a betrayal of promises made to the Northern communities.
Speakers at the event underscored the urgency of the issue, emphasizing the need for immediate intervention to ensure justice for those detained. Calls were also made for increased public pressure on the government to uphold human rights and address long-standing grievances in the region.
The protest is part of a broader movement across the Northern Province, where families of political prisoners and activists continue to demand accountability and action from the authorities.
