Ms. Nilanthi Kottahachchi has lodged a complaint with the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) through her lawyer, alleging that defamatory remarks made by National People’s Power (NPP) MPs on social media have insulted her reputation.
Attorney Namal Rajapaksa, representing Ms. Kottahachchi, revealed that the complaint focuses on a social media post in which an individual claimed to have visited a hotel with Ms. Kottahachchi for Rs. 20,000.
“This baseless claim is defamatory and has caused significant harm to my client’s reputation. She has never had any such relationship with the individual nor does she know them,” Mr. Rajapaksa stated.
The complaint requests the CID to initiate legal action against those responsible for the defamatory post, which has caused substantial prejudice to Ms. Kottahachchi.
Addressing journalists, Mr. Rajapaksa clarified that this legal action is unrelated to the recent controversy surrounding the alleged hijacking of a Prado, which has been widely discussed in the media.
The case underscores the growing concern over the misuse of social media platforms for personal attacks and the legal avenues available to address such incidents.
