Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa is allegedly being sidelined from active politics, with reduced security measures and potential house arrest on the horizon, according to Sagara Kariyawasam, General Secretary of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP). Speaking at a media briefing held at the party headquarters, Kariyawasam expressed concerns over the government’s treatment of the former leader, who he credits with saving the nation.
Kariyawasam warned of lingering security threats, citing the continued activities of the LTTE, as highlighted by a government minister in Parliament during recent commemorations. He argued that, while some leaders have allegedly supported the resurgence of the LTTE, Rajapaksa remains a target due to his role in eradicating the organization.
He emphasized the importance of protecting Rajapaksa, saying, “We do not agree that the leader who saved the country should be in danger. Therefore, we protect him.”
Reflecting on the SLPP’s turbulent journey, Kariyawasam described 2022 as a particularly challenging year for the party. However, he criticized 2024 as “the year in which the people of the country were deceived the most,” accusing the current government of coming to power through false promises.
He warned that the laws of nature will not allow deceit to prevail indefinitely, drawing parallels with the collapse of the Yahapalana government and suggesting that a similar fate awaits the current administration.
The allegations have sparked widespread debate, with supporters of Rajapaksa questioning the motives behind the government’s actions, while critics argue that these claims are politically motivated. The government has yet to comment on Kariyawasam’s accusations.
