The government is reportedly exploring the use of an apartment complex in Kollupitiya to address the accommodation needs of Members of Parliament (MPs). A building in the area has already been identified for this purpose, with a government official conducting an inspection to evaluate its suitability.
The move aims to provide housing facilities for MPs traveling from remote parts of the country. Currently, the Madiwela MPs’ Housing Complex, the primary accommodation facility for parliamentarians, has the capacity to house only around 120 individuals.
Under parliamentary privileges, MPs residing more than 30 kilometers away from Colombo are entitled to accommodation within the city. The proposed Kollupitiya complex is expected to cater to this requirement, easing logistical challenges for legislators traveling to the capital for parliamentary duties.
While details about the chosen building and its costs remain undisclosed, the initiative has sparked interest, particularly given the government’s ongoing efforts to balance public expenditure with parliamentary benefits. Further announcements are expected in the coming weeks regarding the finalization and implementation of the project.
