The Chairman of the Lanka Bus Owners Association, Mr. Gemunu Wijeratne, has announced that bus fares will inevitably see an indefinite increase, citing the high operational costs of maintaining the bus service. He stated that the recent fuel price revision did not include a reduction in diesel prices, which is the primary fuel used for buses, making it impossible to consider lowering fares.
Mr. Wijeratne highlighted that operating expenses, including the cost of spare parts, tires, and other maintenance necessities, have risen significantly. He added that this increase in expenses has placed a substantial financial strain on bus operators, particularly amidst the broader economic challenges currently facing the country.
He further noted that due to these rising costs, bus fares would need to be increased during the upcoming price revision in July, a move he described as unavoidable under the current circumstances. Wijeratne also urged the government to consider the challenges faced by the public transport sector and implement measures to stabilize operational costs, especially in the context of fuel prices.
The Chairman made these remarks during a media briefing held in Colombo, emphasizing the critical state of the public transportation sector and its dependence on consistent and affordable resources to serve commuters effectively.
