The government has decided to retain former Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe as Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to the United States, amidst ongoing discussions with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
This decision comes despite the recent recall of 16 ambassadors and high commissioners, a move initiated to address political appointments in embassies and high commissions. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that these terminations have left several diplomatic posts vacant, adding that the process of appointing new ambassadors and high commissioners is complex and requires significant time.
Samarasinghe’s retention is seen as a strategic move, given the importance of maintaining strong diplomatic ties with the U.S. during critical financial negotiations.
