Universities in the country are facing a critical shortage of faculty, with only 50% of approved positions currently filled. This shortage has created significant challenges in maintaining the quality of education across the higher education system.
Out of 18 higher education institutions governed by the State Universities and the University Grants Commission, approximately 10,000 faculty positions have been sanctioned. However, only half of these roles are occupied, severely straining the system.
The recent economic crisis has exacerbated the situation, prompting around 1,000 university professors to leave the country. As of now, there are no initiatives to incentivize their return.
While universities have opened applications to address the staffing gap, many qualified individuals are not applying. Instead, they are opting for higher-paying opportunities elsewhere, further complicating recruitment efforts.
The growing faculty shortage poses a serious threat to the higher education system, which requires immediate and strategic intervention.
