The Government Information Department has announced plans to re-establish the Press Club, previously a hub for journalists, on a new site in Torrington, Colombo.
The club was originally located near the Lake House building in Colombo but was closed during the administration of former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. The land and building were subsequently handed over to a private hotel complex, effectively ending its operations at that site.
Now, the Press Club will be reopened on a land belonging to the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC). According to sources within the Government Information Department, the facility will be re-established in an existing building on the SLBC premises. The land has already been handed over to the Ministry of Mass Media to facilitate this initiative.
The move is being seen as a step to provide a dedicated space for journalists to gather, collaborate, and engage in their professional activities, signaling renewed support for media professionals in Sri Lanka.
