Leader of the Sarvajana Balaya Party, MP Dilith Jayaweera, made scathing remarks in Parliament today, accusing the National People’s Power government of failing to deliver on its promises and lacking a comprehensive program for the country’s development.
In his address, Jayaweera criticized the government for its inability to go beyond symbolic gestures such as the “Clean Sri Lanka” campaign, which he claimed amounted to little more than “removing pieces of the three-wheeler.” He alleged that the government has effectively “killed the dreams of the people” and has failed to ignite any hope for the future.
Jayaweera expressed skepticism about the government’s ability to meet its election promises, citing concerns over the income and expenditure reports. He challenged the government to transparently disclose its plans to fulfill these promises or, failing that, to publicly admit their inability to do so.
“The people should not be deceived,” Jayaweera stated emphatically. “If the promises made cannot be realized, the government should at least have the decency to express regret publicly.”
His speech triggered strong protests from members of the ruling party, who vocally opposed his criticisms. The heated exchange reflected growing tensions in Parliament over the government’s performance and its accountability to the public.
Jayaweera’s remarks have since sparked broader discussions among political analysts and the public, with many questioning whether the government will respond substantively to the criticisms raised.
