The opposition, led by the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), is reportedly preparing to take decisive action against Speaker Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne, accusing him of disregarding parliamentary tradition.
During a recent discussion, Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, along with several SJB MPs, raised concerns with the Speaker regarding the allocation of parliamentary seats and the composition of committees. They argued that the current arrangements undermine proper parliamentary procedure and representation.
Despite these grievances, the Speaker allegedly showed little regard for the opposition’s concerns, prompting further discontent. The matter was brought up again during a Select Committee meeting, where MP Ajith P. Perera reiterated the opposition’s dissatisfaction, accusing the Speaker of neglecting their input.
In response, the opposition parliamentary group, including Sajith Premadasa, Ranjith Madduma Bandara, Dayasiri Jayasekara, Gayantha Karunathilaka, J.C. Alawathuwala, and Ajith P. Perera, has decided to take the strongest possible measures to safeguard parliamentary tradition and ensure fair representation.
The opposition’s next course of action remains unclear but is expected to involve formal motions within Parliament and potential public campaigns to bring attention to the issue.
