Minister Samantha Vidyarathna likened his government’s approach to governance to a five-year Test match, emphasizing that it requires patience, strategy, and a steady pace rather than quick, flashy results. Speaking at a public meeting in Badulla, he used cricket metaphors to explain the government’s gradual progress.
“This is not a 20/20 match where you immediately aim for sixes and fours,” the minister said. “In Test matches, you take your time, understand the pitch, analyze the bowler, and choose your shots carefully. That’s exactly what we’ve been doing.”
Vidyarathna acknowledged that the government had faced challenges, likening them to a tricky pitch and difficult bowlers. However, he assured the audience that the situation was becoming more favorable. “Now that the pitch is stabilizing, we’ll start scoring runs,” he said. “From next month, you’ll see some sixes and fours. Then, you can applaud as we celebrate those runs.”
He also addressed criticism from detractors, noting that some accuse the government of playing too cautiously. “Yes, in a Test match, there are moments where you defend and hold steady. That’s how you build a long and successful innings,” he explained.
The minister’s cricket analogy served to highlight the government’s long-term strategy, emphasizing that while immediate results may not always be visible, careful planning and consistent effort would eventually lead to success. His comments were met with applause from supporters, who appreciated the optimistic outlook.
