Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Harshana Rajakaruna has leveled serious accusations against the National People’s Power (NPP) government, claiming that vehicles displayed at Galle Face Stadium during its initial days in power have been secretly distributed among the party’s MPs and heads of state institutions appointed by them.
Addressing the media in Gampaha, Rajakaruna alleged that the NPP government initially promised that these vehicles would be auctioned off and the proceeds utilized for public benefit. However, according to him, no such auction has occurred, and the vehicles have instead been allocated to government officials and party members.
Rajakaruna also criticized the NPP for abandoning other key promises made during its campaign. “They said they wouldn’t eat at the Parliament canteen, but now they’re eating there three times a day. They pledged not to accept salaries, retirement allowances, or official residences for MPs, yet they’re enjoying all these perks today,” he said.
The MP accused the NPP of betraying the trust of the people by failing to uphold the values of transparency and accountability that were central to its electoral platform. He further asserted that the government has become disconnected from the public and has ignored the pressing concerns of citizens.
Rajakaruna’s comments come amidst growing criticism of the NPP government for its handling of public resources and its alleged inability to deliver on its promises. He warned that such behavior undermines the credibility of the government and erodes public confidence in its ability to bring about meaningful change.
The SJB MP called on the government to provide a full explanation regarding the distribution of the vehicles and urged it to recommit to its campaign pledges. “The people trusted them to be different, but they have quickly forgotten their promises. The government must start listening to the public and take immediate steps to restore trust,” he said.
This criticism adds to mounting pressure on the NPP government to address allegations of favoritism and lack of transparency in its governance, which opposition parties argue are contrary to the party’s initial commitment to honest and ethical leadership.
