In a case that underscores the persistence of police corruption, four officers from the Weerawila Police Station have been suspended for allegedly extorting Rs. 11,000 from a lorry driver transporting cattle with a valid license. The suspended officers include two sergeants and two constables who were on night patrol in the 19th Colony area of the Weerawila Police Division.
The incident took place on January 10 around 11 p.m. when the officers stopped a lorry transporting cattle. Despite the driver presenting all necessary documentation, the officers reportedly threatened to charge him with animal cruelty unless he paid them a bribe. Feeling coerced, the driver handed over Rs. 11,000.
After the driver lodged a complaint, an initial investigation conducted by the Weerawila Police confirmed the allegations. Based on these findings, the four officers were immediately suspended, and a special inquiry was launched under the supervision of the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) for the Tangalle Division.
The scandal has reignited public frustration over police misconduct, with many pointing out that corruption remains prevalent despite promises of reform under the new government. Critics argue that such behavior erodes public trust in law enforcement and undermines the rule of law.
Police officials have pledged a thorough investigation and assured that strict action will be taken against those involved. The incident highlights the urgent need for systemic reforms to address corruption within law enforcement and restore public confidence. Further updates on the investigation are expected in the coming days.
