Former AFS Scholar and Current U.S. Presidential Advisor Visits Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka is privileged to welcome Dr. Patrick Mendis, a distinguished son born of its soil and now an internationally renowned scholar, diplomat and U.S. presidential advisor, who will be delivering two highly anticipated presentations tomorrow the 15th and 17th of January in Colombo.
Dr.Mendis’ extensive credentials include degrees from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, the University of Minnesota, and Harvard University. He currently serves as a Presidential Advisor on National Security Education at the U.S. Department of Defense, a White House appointment endorsed by the U.S. Congress. His illustrious career also includes roles as a national commissioner to UNESCO at the U.S. Department of State and a military professor at NATO and Indo-Pacific Commands.
A Story of Inspiration and Global Impact
Dr. Patrick Mendis’ remarkable journey began in the rural heartland of Polonnaruwa, where he distinguished himself as a student, boy scout and cadet. Awarded the prestigious American Field Service (AFS) scholarship — an honor similar to that later received by Sri Lanka’s current Prime Minister, Dr. Harini Amarasuriya — he studied at Perham High School in Minnesota. He went on to excel at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura as a top scholar, accomplished sportsman, and student leader. Dr. Mendis’ significant contributions to academia and global diplomacy are celebrated worldwide, highlighted by the Patrick Mendis Prize, which is awarded annually to the top student leader in the Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce at his alma mater.
Vice Chancellor Senior Prof. Pathmalal Manage praised Dr. Mendis, stating, “We are honored to have a world-class educator and diplomat closely associated with our university. His achievements inspire generations of students to pursue their dreams and serve society.”
Prof. Chandana Gunathilaka, Head of the Department of Finance, added, “Dr. Mendis embodies excellence and global leadership. His journey from Sri Jayewardenepura to the global stage reflects the transformative power of education.”
