The government is committed to providing justice to all citizens who have suffered from systemic privilege and patronage, according to Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya. Speaking at a ceremony to dedicate the newly renovated Court of Appeal building, fully donated by the People’s Republic of China, the Prime Minister emphasized the importance of ensuring justice for everyone in the country.
Dr. Amarasuriya highlighted that investing in the judicial system and improving facilities for justice is a reflection of a government’s commitment to its people. She described the new building not just as a physical structure but as a symbol of justice, fairness, equality, and dignity for all.
She acknowledged decades of injustice that many have endured under systems of privilege and patronage. The government, she said, aims to rectify past wrongs and ensure that every individual has equal access to justice. The judiciary’s independence and fairness are critical for fostering public faith in the legal system, and judges must use their constitutional powers impartially to deliver justice.
The Prime Minister stressed the importance of protecting the rights of vulnerable groups, including women, children, and the disabled, ensuring they do not face additional hardship or intimidation while seeking justice. She underscored the need for respect and dignity for all actors in the judicial process, especially those who have endured long struggles to obtain justice.
Dr. Amarasuriya expressed gratitude to the People’s Republic of China for their generosity in supporting Sri Lanka’s justice system and for their role in strengthening the administration of justice in the country.
The event, held to inaugurate the renovated Court of Appeal building, was attended by Chinese Ambassador Qi Zhenhong, Chief Justice Murdu Fernando, and other dignitaries.
