Six grade ten students from Ambagamuwa College were injured and hospitalized following the collapse of an unsecured restaurant in Ginigathena town, located opposite the Ginigathena police station, this morning (18).
The students had reportedly visited the restaurant while attending an external class in the town. The accident occurred when the wooden floor of the restaurant’s dilapidated basement gave way, causing the students to fall approximately 15 feet down a slope.
Local residents quickly intervened, transporting the injured students to the Ginigathena Regional Hospital. A hospital spokesperson confirmed that none of the students sustained life-threatening injuries.
The restaurant, described as unsafe, unhygienic, and structurally unstable, has been closed by the Ginigathena police, who are conducting further investigations into the incident.
