Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa has decided to leave the official residence in Colombo 07, Wijerama, which was provided by the government. This decision follows a notice issued by President Anura Dissanayake, requiring Rajapaksa to pay a monthly rent of Rs. 4.6 million if he chose to remain in the property.
Sources close to the former president indicate that he is expected to relocate to Carlton House in Tangalle, Medamulana, which has been a long-standing family residence.
Commenting on the matter, Member of Parliament Namal Rajapaksa clarified that the Wijerama residence is owned by the government and was allocated to his father as a former president, considering security concerns. He emphasized that the property does not belong to the Rajapaksa family or his father personally. Namal further stated that his father is willing to vacate the residence whenever requested by the government, underscoring their compliance with the directive.
The move marks a significant shift in Mahinda Rajapaksa’s accommodations, highlighting the government’s efforts to regulate the use of state resources.
