Public Security Minister Ananda Wijepala disclosed in Parliament that military, police, and civil security officers have been arrested in connection with recent crimes and shootings, sparking widespread concern. Among those detained are an army major, six other military personnel, a police officer, and a civil security officer.
Minister Wijepala revealed that 15 organized criminals suspected of aiding these crimes, along with 15 additional suspects, were also apprehended.
“Since September 23, we have observed cases where active-duty military officers were involved in criminal operations,” he stated during his address.
The minister further informed Parliament that since the current government assumed power, authorities have confiscated a range of weapons, including seven T-56 rifles, 10 pistols, 14 revolvers, 58 12-bore guns, and 13 flintlock guns.
The revelations underscore the urgent need to address internal security breaches and ensure accountability within the ranks of the nation’s security forces.
