The Sri Lankan Police have launched an investigation following the circulation of a video on social media showing several police officers sleeping under the influence of alcohol during their duty hours.
Police Media Spokesperson, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Buddhika Manatunga, addressed the issue, confirming that the incident has drawn serious attention from the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and senior police officials.
SSP Buddhika Manatunga stated:
“A video is circulating on social media showing several police officers sleeping in a certain place during their duty hours.”
He added that the IGP has expressed strong displeasure regarding the actions of the officers involved and has held the senior officers of the concerned police division accountable for allowing such behavior.
The Police Special Investigation Unit (SIU) has initiated a comprehensive inquiry into the incident. SSP Manatunga emphasized that strict disciplinary action will be taken against all officers found responsible once the investigation concludes.
This incident has sparked public concern over the discipline and accountability of law enforcement officials, particularly as such behavior undermines the trust placed in the police force. Further updates are expected following the completion of the investigation.
