The Electricity Users Association announced that the government is planning to review the recent reduction in electricity tariffs, allegedly as part of efforts to comply with International Monetary Fund (IMF) requirements.
Speaking at a media conference in Colombo, the association’s chairman, R.M. Athula, revealed that key figures, including the Chairman of the Electricity Board, the General Manager, the Ministry Secretary, the Ministry of Finance, and the Minister, are collaboratively preparing for this review.
R.M. Athula also mentioned that the Electricity Board has proposed to Parliament that the matter be addressed by the Privileges Committee.
The proposed review has raised concerns among electricity users, as it could potentially lead to changes in the current tariff structure. Further details are expected as the government and relevant institutions deliberate on the issue.
