United National Party (UNP) General Secretary and former Member of Parliament Thalatha Athukorala has stated that if former President Ranil Wickremesinghe is found responsible for the controversial Central Bank bond scam, he should be arrested and given a prison sentence.
Speaking at a UNP rally in Galle, Athukorala emphasized that no individual, regardless of their political stature, should be above the law. “If Ranil Wickremesinghe is guilty, he should face the consequences like any other citizen. Justice must prevail,” she said.
The bond scam, which occurred during Wickremesinghe’s tenure as Prime Minister, remains one of the most high-profile financial controversies in Sri Lanka. The case has continued to attract public scrutiny, with calls for accountability and transparency in its handling.
Athukorala’s comments come amid growing public and political pressure for decisive action against those implicated in the bond scam, further highlighting the division within the UNP regarding the scandal. Her remarks signal the party’s commitment to holding all individuals accountable, regardless of their political affiliation.
The Central Bank bond scam has long been a contentious issue in Sri Lanka, with allegations of financial mismanagement and favoritism causing significant damage to public trust in state institutions. Athukorala’s bold stance underscores the importance of addressing corruption at all levels to restore confidence in the country’s governance.
