Dr. Ilango Gandhi, leader of the All Ceylon Progressive Workers’ Front, has dismissed as false claims by the current government that it saved Sri Lanka from bankruptcy in just two months. Speaking to the media in Hatton, he criticized the government for spreading what he described as blatant lies.
Dr. Gandhi acknowledged the efforts of former President Ranil Wickremesinghe in addressing the country’s financial crisis. “Almost two years ago, when this country was bankrupt, both Sajith Premadasa and Anura Kumara Dissanayake were asked to take over, but they declined. However, Ranil Wickremesinghe stepped up, eliminated queues, secured oil and dollars, and initiated measures that stabilized the country. Yet now, this government claims to have saved the country in two months—a claim that is completely false,” he said.
While clarifying that he does not blame the current administration, Dr. Gandhi emphasized that lying to the public undermines trust. He urged the government to focus on serving the people rather than making false claims.
“The price of rice and other essential goods has skyrocketed compared to two years ago. The government says there is enough rice for three months, yet people do not see it being distributed. They also promised six thousand rupees to school children, but when parents inquire with Grama Sevaka Niladharis, they are told no such circular exists. This is not what people asked for; it’s yet another unfulfilled promise,” Dr. Gandhi remarked.
He called on the government to prioritize honesty and transparency, noting that empty promises have only compounded public frustration. “Even if this government rules for 100 years, not 50, the people will demand results—not lies,” he concluded.
