A special discussion chaired by Minister of Transport, Highways, Ports, and Aviation Bimal Ratnayake was held recently at Bandaranaike International Airport to address the growing need for domestic flights and expanded airport facilities.
During the meeting, it was decided to initiate domestic flights to enhance connectivity within the country, a move aligned with the increasing number of tourist arrivals. The government also plans to add at least 20 check-in counters to the existing ones, following a site inspection to assess the requirements for expanding airport facilities.
The discussion emphasized improving services to attract more international airlines, with preparations underway to accommodate an estimated 12 million air passengers annually by 2028. Minister Ratnayake stressed the importance of aligning these efforts with the tourism industry, a key economic driver, to elevate its contribution to the country’s income.
The meeting was attended by several high-ranking officials, including Defense Secretary Sampath Thuyyakontha, Ministry Secretary Senior Professor Kapila C. Perera, Air Force Commander Air Vice Marshal Vasu Bandu Edirisinghe, Chairman of the Tourism Board Buddhika Hewawasam, Chairman of the Civil Aviation Authority Sunil Jayaratne, and Chairman of Airports and Aviation Services Chief Vice Marshal Harsha Abeywickrama.
The proposed initiatives aim to strengthen tourism infrastructure, improve air connectivity, and position Sri Lanka as a more accessible and attractive destination for travelers worldwide.
