Minister Bimal Rathnayake announced that the Election Commission is expected to hold the Local Government (LG) Elections in either the second or fourth week of April this year. Speaking to the media in Jaffna, he emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring the elections take place as planned.
The Minister highlighted that all political parties have collectively submitted a draft Bill to Parliament to amend the Local Authorities Elections Act to facilitate the LG Elections. He noted that despite several petitions currently filed in court, these legal challenges are not expected to delay the electoral process significantly.
Rathnayake stated that the court has a limited timeframe to deliver its verdict, and the Election Commission is likely to proceed with preparations for the elections accordingly. Additionally, he reiterated the government’s goal of conducting the Provincial Council Elections in the Northern Province and other regions across Sri Lanka without unnecessary delays.
