The Ministry of Public Administration, Provincial Councils, and Local Government has estimated that this year’s 77th Independence Day celebrations will cost 87 million rupees, significantly lower than the 200 million rupees spent on last year’s event.
The decision to cut costs comes as part of the government’s broader strategy to conduct the celebrations in a simpler and more solemn manner, with a focus on public participation rather than extravagant displays.
According to ministry sources, several key measures have been taken to reduce expenses. The huts for invited guests and other attendees will be procured from a government factory at an estimated cost of 37 million rupees. Additionally, iron pipes and other available equipment from ministry stores will be used to construct the huts, further minimizing expenses.
Scale-Back on Military and Parade Displays
This year, the number of invited guests has been limited, and the presence of military personnel has been reduced by 50 percent compared to previous years. Unlike previous celebrations, there will be no air show, and instead of multiple helicopters, only one helicopter will fly over the event carrying the national flag.
Similarly, military vehicles, including tanks and artillery, will not be featured in the parade. Traditionally, tanks were transported from Jaffna to Colombo for Independence Day celebrations, costing over 400,000 rupees in fuel per tank. This year’s decision to exclude heavy military vehicles is expected to contribute to significant savings.
Additionally, rather than separate regimental parades, the Sri Lanka Army and Police will each conduct one combined parade, further streamlining the event.
No Independence Day Commemorative Zone or Extravagant Print Material
Unlike previous years, the government has decided not to print a commemorative zone for the Independence Day event, cutting down on unnecessary printing expenses.
Despite these reductions, traditional cultural and ceremonial aspects will be retained. The celebrations will still feature Jayamangala Gatha, Magul Pera, school cadet bands, and cultural performances, preserving the patriotic spirit of the occasion.
The Ministry of Public Administration has emphasized that the 2025 Independence Day celebrations will focus on simplicity and national pride, ensuring a dignified and meaningful event while keeping public expenditure under control.
