The 77th Independence Day celebrations, set to take place on February 4 at Independence Square, will be conducted with a greater emphasis on public participation and a scaled-down military display, according to Minister of Public Administration, Provincial Councils, and Local Government, Dr. A.H.M.H. Abeyratne.
Speaking at a media briefing in Colombo, the Minister highlighted that this year’s celebrations will be organized in a more inclusive manner, allowing the general public to engage more closely in the national event.
Defense Secretary Sampath Thuiyakontha, who was also present at the briefing, announced that the military parade will see a significant reduction in scale. Compared to last year, the number of military personnel participating has been reduced by 1,511, bringing the total down to 1,873.
The Air Force will deploy only three aircraft for the event, while the traditional armored vehicle parade has been completely omitted this year. Instead, the event will focus solely on a personnel march. However, as per tradition, the Sri Lanka Navy will still conduct a 25-gun salute to mark the occasion.
In total, 4,421 security forces personnel will participate in the celebrations, reflecting the government’s approach to a more cost-effective and publicly engaged Independence Day event.
