President Anura Kumara Dissanayake is set to make his first official visit to Jaffna in the Northern Province tomorrow (January 31), marking a significant engagement with the region since the National People’s Power (NPP) government assumed power.
During the visit, the President is expected to participate in high-level discussions in the Valvettithurai and Chavakachcheri areas, addressing pressing regional concerns. Additionally, he will attend the Jaffna District Coordination Committee meeting to review ongoing development initiatives and regional governance matters.
Meanwhile, a hunger strike organized by the North and East Unemployed Graduates Association has gained momentum in front of the Northern Provincial Governor’s Office. The protest, which began yesterday (January 29), highlights the longstanding issue of unemployment among graduates in the region. Protesters claim that despite repeated promises from multiple political parties, nearly 21,000 graduates from the North and East remain jobless.
The demonstrators have specifically called for direct employment opportunities without competitive examinations, urging the government to prioritize their demands. With the protest intensifying ahead of the President’s arrival, reports suggest that he may engage in discussions with representatives of the association to address their concerns.
President Dissanayake’s visit comes at a critical juncture, as his administration faces mounting expectations to deliver on promises of economic revival, employment generation, and inclusive governance. The outcome of this visit is expected to shape the government’s approach toward resolving key issues affecting the Northern Province.
