A Sri Lankan court on Wednesday ruled that the unexplained death of a renowned businessman in late December last year was a murder and accordingly directed the police to arrest the suspects at the earliest.
The ruling was made by the Colombo Magistrate Rajindra Jayasuriya that determined businessman Dinesh Schaffter died as an external pressure applied on his neck and facial area.
The court ruling followed a report submitted by a five-member expert committee comprising of Judicial Medical Officers that was set up to establish the true cause of death that had remained a mystery to date.
Schaffter who was the Director of the Janashakthi PLC Group, was found tied up in his car at a cemetery on December 15, 2022 and died a day later while receiving treatment at the ICU of the National Hospital in Colombo.
