The United National Party (UNP) and the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) are in advanced discussions to form an alliance for the upcoming local government elections, MP Gayantha Karunathilaka officially announced today.
Speaking at a media briefing, Karunathilaka revealed that both parties had initially planned to collaborate as part of a long-term strategy for the next national election. However, given the current political landscape, the parties have expedited negotiations to ensure a unified front ahead of the local government elections.
So far, the UNP and SJB have engaged in four rounds of discussions, with Karunathilaka emphasizing that further talks are required to finalize the terms of the alliance. While key aspects of the agreement are still under negotiation, the collaboration signals a major shift in the opposition’s approach to contesting upcoming elections.
Political analysts view this alliance as a strategic move to consolidate the center-right voter base, potentially posing a stronger challenge to the ruling party. The coming weeks will be crucial in determining the final framework and leadership structure of the coalition.
