Archbishop Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith has called for the immediate abolition of the current constitution, emphasizing the urgent need for a new constitutional framework that ensures true political, economic, and legal reforms in Sri Lanka.
Speaking at a special service held to commemorate the 77th Independence Day, the Archbishop stressed that a new constitution must be introduced as soon as possible to address the nation’s governance issues. He highlighted the need for comprehensive reforms that guarantee true freedom for the people of Sri Lanka.
He further stated that beyond constitutional change, there is a pressing necessity to repeal the Online Security Bill and introduce new laws that ensure the head of state serves the people rather than enjoying power and privilege. He firmly asserted that leaders should be legally bound to act in service of the nation rather than benefit from their positions.
“The current constitution should be abolished as soon as possible,” the Archbishop declared. “New legislation should be introduced that will legally bind the head of state to serve the nation without enjoying power and privilege.”
His remarks underscore growing calls for systemic political change in Sri Lanka, with increasing demands for greater accountability, transparency, and democratic governance.
