Chairman of the Nuwara Eliya District Coordination Committee and National People’s Power (NPP) MP, Manjula Suraweera, stated that education today is better than it was before, while addressing the Nuwara Eliya District Coordination Meeting held on January 30 at the Nuwara Eliya District Secretariat Auditorium. The meeting was held under his patronage, alongside Central Province Governor S. B. M. Abhayakoon.
During his speech, Suraweera emphasized that the District Coordination Committee meeting is one of the most important gatherings for public servants, and that all government officials should attend unless they are engaged in judicial work. He argued that the absence of officials at these meetings leads to delays in solving public issues, causing unnecessary hardship for citizens.
Suraweera also addressed the recurring natural disasters in the district, calling for permanent solutions and urging all relevant institutions to work together in assisting affected communities. Another major topic of discussion was the poor maintenance of elephant fences in the region. It was revealed that 68 square meters of fencing had been established, but efforts were needed to prevent damage caused by human-elephant conflicts.
Education was another focal point of the meeting. Officials noted that efforts have been made to address teacher shortages and that teacher balancing activities have already begun within the district’s existing education zones. According to reports presented at the meeting, educational outcomes in the district have improved compared to previous years.
Additionally, discussions were held on strategies to develop Nuwara Eliya as Sri Lanka’s top tourist destination. Authorities agreed on necessary improvements to Gregory Lake and its surrounding areas, aiming to enhance tourism facilities and infrastructure.
The meeting was attended by Deputy Minister of Education and Higher Education Madura Daham Bandara, Nuwara Eliya District MPs K. Kalaichelvey, Anushka Thilakaratne, and V. Radha Krishnan, Nuwara Eliya District Secretary Nandana Galabada, Central Province Chief Secretary Ajith Premawansa, along with several government officials and police officers.
