Colombo, February 3 – A passenger traveling in business class on SriLankan Airlines flight UL 226 from Dubai to Colombo was apprehended upon arrival at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) after allegedly stealing from fellow travelers’ hand luggage during the overnight flight.
According to a post by Prasaana Gunawardena in the Facebook group Sri Lankan Airlines (FANS), the suspect reportedly used a sharp instrument to cut open bags while passengers were asleep. The thefts were only discovered when passengers prepared to disembark and found valuables including gold sovereigns, expensive wristwatches, and wallets missing from their luggage stored in overhead compartments.
Upon receiving reports, Sri Lankan Air Force personnel at BIA swiftly intervened, cornering the suspect. Following interrogation, he admitted to the theft, and most of the stolen items were recovered from his baggage. Additionally, authorities detained three to four Chinese nationals traveling in economy class, who were believed to be linked to the crime.
This incident highlights the increasing prevalence of organized in-flight thefts, particularly on long-haul routes, where criminals take advantage of sleeping passengers. Authorities and airline officials have urged travelers to remain vigilant and keep their valuables secured at all times.
SriLankan Airlines has yet to issue an official statement on the incident, but the swift response by security personnel has been praised.
