Health Minister Nalinda Jayatissa has revealed a list of Members of Parliament (MPs) who received significant compensation from the government, claiming their homes were damaged during the 2022 protests and unrest.
Speaking in Parliament today, Jayatissa disclosed that 43 MPs were awarded substantial sums in compensation, with some receiving millions of rupees under the government’s compensation scheme.
Among the highest beneficiaries, former Minister Johnston Fernando reportedly received Rs. 934 lakhs (93.4 million rupees), while Minister Keheliya Rambukwella received Rs. 959 lakhs (95.9 million rupees).
Jayatissa’s revelation has sparked controversy and public outrage, as these payments come at a time when Sri Lanka is struggling with economic hardship and many victims of the 2022 crisis remain without adequate support.
The compensation payouts have raised questions about the fairness and transparency of the process, with critics arguing that government resources were misused to benefit politicians rather than those who suffered genuine losses.
More details are expected to emerge as the Parliament debates the issue, with growing calls for a review of the compensation process and accountability for the funds distributed.
