Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan, also known as Pillayan, has strongly refuted allegations linking him to the 2019 Easter Sunday attacks, calling the claims baseless and politically motivated.
Speaking to the Daily Mirror, Pillayan responded to accusations made by Asaad Maulana, who is reportedly seeking permanent residence abroad, claiming he faces threats to his life. According to Pillayan, Maulana’s actions raise serious doubts about his credibility, particularly given the timing of his allegations.
“This attack happened six years ago. Why did he wait for four years to bring this up, first to Channel 4 and then to the Geneva Human Rights Commission?” Pillayan questioned. He further pointed out that Ravi Seneviratne, the current Secretary to the Ministry of Public Security, was the former head of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) at the time of the bombings, implying that thorough investigations had already been conducted.
“Are the President and the CID stupid? Can’t they differentiate between those who have given up weapons and those involved in ISIS and Muslim extremism?” he asked, emphasizing that he had renounced armed struggle and transitioned into politics, becoming a Chief Minister.
Pillayan also highlighted that he was in prison between 2015 and 2020, making it impossible for him to have played any role in planning or executing the attacks. He urged the government to bring Maulana back to Sri Lanka for questioning, stating that he is cooperating with the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and supports law enforcement efforts to prosecute Maulana if his claims are proven false.
