The Sri Lankan man, who was suspected to have been taken hostage by the Islamic militant group Hamas is confirmed to have been killed during the October 6 massacre in southern Israeli, officials in Colombo said on Friday.
They said the death of the 48-year-old Sujith Bandara Yatawara from Wennapuwa in the island’s north-western province was confirmed by the Israeli police following DNA tests on samples taken from his children, they said.
Bandara was reported missing following the October 6 mayhem where some 1,400 Israelis and foreigners were massacred by Hamas militants.
Bandara had travelled to Israel in 2015 for employment. Officials said that Bandara’s body would be sent to Colombo following religious rites and public honours.
He is the second Sri Lankan to have been killed in the Hamas attack.
Earlier a Sri Lankan female caregiver identified as Anula Jayathilake was also murdered in the Hamas raid and her remains were brought down to Colombo late last month.
The whereabouts of two more Sri Lankans who were caught up in the Hamas raid still remain unknown, according to the officials.
There are estimated 8,000 Sri Lankan documented workers in the Jewish State, mostly women employed as caregivers.
