A faction within the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) is reportedly blocking efforts to merge the party with the United National Party (UNP), fearing that such a move would result in a loss of their positions.
According to party insiders, a national list MP from the SJB is among those actively opposing the discussions, allegedly working behind the scenes to derail negotiations. A party spokesperson confirmed that although there were initial talks about contesting the upcoming local government elections under a common symbol, the merger now appears unlikely given the current resistance within the party.
The spokesperson further revealed that one of the key SJB leaders is hesitant about the proposed merger, making it clear that the discussions have not gained momentum. With internal opposition growing, the possibility of a UNP-SJB alliance remains uncertain, despite pressure from some factions advocating for unity ahead of the elections.
