As concerns over air quality continue to grow, medical research has revealed that polluted air poses significant risks to the health of unborn babies, warns Professor Duminda Yasaratne, a specialist in respiratory diseases.
According to Professor Yasaratne, exposure to air pollution during pregnancy can lead to low birth weight, respiratory issues in newborns, and an increased risk of stillbirth or birth defects. The harmful particles and toxins in polluted air can negatively impact fetal development, leading to long-term health consequences.
In response to these alarming findings, a new research study is being conducted with the support of the Universities of Peradeniya and Sri Jayewardenepura to further examine the effects of air pollution on public health.
Professor Yasaratne also highlighted that 40% of patients visiting outpatient hospital departments suffer from respiratory problems, with symptoms ranging from minor breathing difficulties and viral infections to more severe conditions like pneumonia.
Given these risks, medical experts stress the urgent need for effective air pollution control measures to protect both pregnant mothers and the general public from its harmful effects.
